The Establishment of the Second Republic

Following the February Revolution of 1848, the French Second Republic was established. One of its significant events was the presidential election held on December 10th and 11th, 1848. This election marked the first time a president was elected in France.

Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, emerged as the victor of the election. He secured an overwhelming majority of votes, capturing 74.4% of the total ballots cast. The other candidates, including Eugène Cavaignac and Alexandre Ledru-Rollin, received significantly fewer votes.
