Haarlem, June 19th, 2023 – For the first time this year, Haarlem will commemorate Keti Koti, the abolition of slavery 150 years ago, on July 1st, 2023. The event will feature a speech by the mayor, workshops, market stalls, and the annual Keti Koti commemoration.
Significance of Keti Koti
Keti Koti, which means "Chains Broken" in the Sranan Tongo language, marks the day on July 1st, 1863, when slavery was abolished in the Dutch colonies. The commemoration aims to raise awareness about the legacy of slavery and its impact on the lives of people of African descent.
Highlights of the Event
The Keti Koti festivities in Haarlem will take place from June 19th to July 3rd. Highlights include: * Workshops on the history of slavery and its contemporary relevance * Market stalls offering food, drinks, and cultural products * A youth program featuring music, dance, and storytelling * A special church service on July 1st, followed by a procession and the laying of wreaths at the Slave Monument
